Sammy

Hi, I’m Sammy, and that’s me with a painting I did of the pokemon, Magikarp. Born in Port Kembla in 1984, I am a proud Koori woman, of Dharawal and Wandandian Country lineage. Graphic art has always been essential to my being, and in 2015 I attained a Bachelor of Arts (Graphic Design) through Charles Sturt University.

My region the Illawarra is breathtaking, lush with beaches, bush, mountains, and lakes; it is a wealth of inspiration for artists. Alas, not for this one. You see, I’m more an indoors girl, typically playing video games, watching a film or anime, baking or sketching at my computer. So when I felt inspired to experiment in contemporary Aboriginal art, taking nature as my subject matter didn’t feel honest to my character.

My subject matter is pop culture. You’ll find in my gallery Disney, Looney Tunes, Doctor Who, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Ball Z, and some original work. My medium is digital, so besides art prints, my work is also featured on items like clothing, mugs, phone cases, and stationery.
